Course Overview

Basic Life Support (BLS) & CPR Instructor Skills Video Course

Detailed Course Overview

This course is a comprehensive collection of teaching and practice videos designed for instructors conducting Basic Life Support (BLS) and CPR training in simulation/skill laboratories.

The videos provide a structured visual demonstration of essential BLS and CPR skills, allowing instructors to demonstrate the correct technique, explain critical steps, and guide learners during hands-on practice with manikins and training equipment.

The course progresses from initial scene assessment and patient assessment through CPR, ventilation, AED use, choking management, special age-group considerations, teamwork, and handover after resuscitation.

What This Course Covers

1. Initial Assessment & Emergency Recognition

Scene Safety – Practice Video
Demonstrates how to approach an emergency safely, identify potential hazards, protect the rescuer and victim, and establish a safe environment before beginning assessment.

AVPU Assessment – Practice Video
Demonstrates assessment of the victim's level of consciousness using the AVPU approach – Alert, Voice, Pain and Unresponsive.

Primary Assessment – Practice Video
Demonstrates a systematic primary assessment of an emergency victim, helping learners rapidly identify immediately life-threatening problems.

Assessment of Breathing – Training Video
Demonstrates how to assess whether the victim is breathing normally and recognise abnormal or absent breathing that may indicate cardiac arrest.

Assessment of Pulse in Emergency – Training Video
Demonstrates appropriate pulse assessment in an emergency situation and how pulse findings contribute to deciding the next step in resuscitation.

2. Activation of Emergency Medical Services

Emergency Ambulance Activation – Practice Video

Demonstrates how to activate emergency medical assistance, communicate essential information, provide the victim's location and coordinate with emergency responders.

The video emphasises the importance of calling for help early while resuscitation is initiated without unnecessary delay.

3. Adult CPR Skills

Chest Compression – Practice Video

Demonstrates correct chest compression technique, including:

  • Correct hand position
  • Body position
  • Compression depth
  • Compression rate
  • Allowing complete chest recoil
  • Maintaining effective compressions
  • Minimising interruptions

Giving Breaths Using a Pocket Mask

Demonstrates ventilation using a pocket mask, including mask placement, maintaining an effective seal and delivering appropriate rescue breaths.

Giving Breaths Using Mouth-to-Mouth Technique

Demonstrates the mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing technique and important precautions for effective ventilation.

Giving Breaths Using Bag-and-Mask Device

Demonstrates ventilation using a bag-mask device, including positioning, mask seal, ventilation technique and coordination between rescuers.

4. AED Skills

Using an AED – Training Video

Demonstrates the practical use of an Automated External Defibrillator during cardiac arrest.

The video covers:

  • Switching on the AED
  • Applying AED pads correctly
  • Following voice/visual prompts
  • Ensuring everyone is clear during analysis
  • Safe delivery of shock when advised
  • Immediately resuming CPR
  • Minimising interruptions in chest compressions

The emphasis is on helping learners become confident and safe AED users.

5. One-Rescuer and Two-Rescuer CPR

One-Rescuer CPR – Training Video

Demonstrates the complete sequence of CPR performed by a single rescuer, from recognition of cardiac arrest through activation of emergency assistance, CPR, ventilation and AED integration.

Two-Rescuer CPR – Training Video

Demonstrates coordinated CPR involving two rescuers, including:

  • Role allocation
  • Chest compression and ventilation coordination
  • Rescuer changeover
  • Communication
  • Minimising interruptions
  • AED coordination

These videos help learners understand that effective CPR is both a technical skill and a teamwork skill.

6. Paediatric CPR Skills

Chest Compressions for Children – Training Video

Demonstrates appropriate chest compression technique for a child, including positioning, hand technique, compression depth and coordination with rescue breaths according to the applicable BLS protocol.

Chest Compressions for Infants – Training Video

Demonstrates appropriate infant chest compression technique using an infant manikin, with emphasis on correct positioning, compression technique, depth and rate.

Infant Ventilation Using a Bag-and-Mask Device

Demonstrates effective bag-mask ventilation for an infant, including positioning, mask selection, seal and gentle ventilation.

These videos help instructors teach the important differences between adult, child and infant resuscitation.

7. Choking Management

Choking Relief in Adults – Training Video

Demonstrates recognition and management of severe choking in an adult, including appropriate first-aid interventions and transition to CPR when the victim becomes unresponsive.

Choking Relief in Children – Training Video

Demonstrates appropriate choking management for a child, with emphasis on recognising severe airway obstruction and providing age-appropriate intervention.

Choking Relief in Infants – Training Video

Demonstrates appropriate management of severe choking in an infant using the correct infant technique.

These videos focus on rapid recognition, correct technique and avoidance of inappropriate interventions.

8. Rescue Breathing

Rescue Breathing in an Unconscious Victim – Training Video

Demonstrates rescue breathing for an unconscious victim who requires ventilatory support but does not require chest compressions, according to the applicable BLS protocol.

The video demonstrates appropriate positioning, airway management, ventilation technique and monitoring.

9. Teamwork During CPR

Teamwork During CPR – Training Video

Demonstrates how a resuscitation team should work together during a cardiac arrest.

Key elements include:

  • Clear role allocation
  • Effective communication
  • Leadership
  • Closed-loop communication
  • Coordinating chest compressions and ventilation
  • AED coordination
  • Timely rescuer rotation
  • Minimising interruptions
  • Maintaining situational awareness

The objective is to demonstrate that high-quality CPR depends not only on individual technical skills but also on effective team performance.

10. Handover After Resuscitation

Handover After Resuscitation – Training Video

Demonstrates how the resuscitation team should hand over the victim to the arriving emergency medical team or healthcare professionals.

The video focuses on communicating important information such as:

  • What happened
  • Time of collapse
  • Initial condition
  • Responsiveness
  • Breathing and pulse findings
  • CPR performed
  • AED use and shocks delivered
  • Response to resuscitation
  • Other relevant observations or interventions

The goal is to ensure a clear, concise and organised transition of care.
