Venepuncture
VENEPUNCTURE – Peripheral Venous Blood Sampling
Venepuncture is one of the most frequently performed clinical procedures in undergraduate medical practice and is an essential skill for obtaining blood samples for diagnosis, monitoring and clinical decision-making.
This simulation-based Venepuncture course provides undergraduate medical students with a structured, step-by-step approach to learning and practising peripheral venous blood sampling in a safe clinical skills laboratory environment. The course goes beyond needle insertion and focuses on the complete clinical workflow—from patient identification and communication to specimen handling, sharps safety, complication management and documentation.
Learners are introduced to the relevant superficial venous anatomy, indications for venepuncture, equipment selection, infection-prevention principles, patient positioning, vein selection, skin preparation and safe venepuncture technique. The course also emphasises correct blood collection, specimen identification and handling, immediate sharps disposal, patient aftercare and recognition of common complications.
Through faculty demonstration, simulation, deliberate practice, peer learning and structured feedback, students have the opportunity to repeatedly practise the skill before performing it in the clinical environment.
The course concludes with Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) to assess the learner's ability to perform venepuncture safely and systematically.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, the learner will be able to:
Knowledge
- Define venepuncture and describe its clinical applications.
- Identify appropriate venepuncture sites.
- Describe the relevant superficial venous anatomy of the upper limb.
- List the equipment required for venepuncture.
- Explain infection-prevention and standard-precaution principles.
- Describe the sequential steps of peripheral venepuncture.
- Explain appropriate specimen collection and handling.
- Identify common complications and their management.
- Explain the principles of sharps safety and specimen identification.
Clinical Skills
The learner will be able to:
- Prepare the equipment and clinical environment.
- Perform appropriate hand hygiene.
- Correctly identify the patient and requested investigation.
- Explain the procedure and obtain appropriate consent.
- Position the patient safely.
- Assess and select an appropriate vein.
- Apply a tourniquet correctly.
- Perform appropriate skin antisepsis.
- Perform venepuncture using a controlled technique.
- Collect the required blood sample.
- Handle blood collection tubes appropriately.
- Release the tourniquet and safely withdraw the needle.
- Apply pressure and dressing to the puncture site.
- Dispose of the used needle safely without recapping.
- Label and handle the specimen correctly.
- Provide appropriate post-procedure care.
- Recognise and respond to common complications.
- Complete appropriate documentation.
Professionalism and Communication
The learner will demonstrate:
- Respectful patient communication.
- Appropriate explanation of the procedure.
- Informed consent.
- Maintenance of privacy and dignity.
- Reassurance of an anxious patient.
- Recognition of patient discomfort or distress.
- Appropriate professional behaviour.
- Commitment to patient and healthcare-worker safety.
